What's in a name?

First I'll talk about Evangeline's name, just because I can't resist posting this cuteness. :) Then I'll get around to the name of this blog ...

Evangeline, meaning "good news" or "bearer of good news," was a name invented by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow for his Acadian epic poem, "Evangeline." It became somewhat popular around the year 1900, but flew under the radar until 2006-ish. Around 2007 was when Steven and I started talking about the possibility of using the name if we ever had a daughter. At that point, its ranking was #459. Now it's almost doubled to #286. Go figure.

Anyway, enough of that. As most of you know, I started this blog so I could get away from using Facebook. I planned this escape a few days prior to posting this, but I needed a decent blog name. Something simple, yet memorable. Something meaningful, but not "cutesy." (Originality, however, was not an issue ... How many Skadals, other than my husband's family, can there be?)

"Summer of Skadal" works, I think. Steven and I got married in summer. Evangeline was born in the summer. Heck, it's summer now. Also, "Summer of _____" is awesome in general because of the 156th episode of Seinfeld, "The Summer of George." How can we go wrong with that??

  1. Summer is also the time of triple digit Houston weather! Lol. Evangeline is such a nice name, elegant, yet not pretentious and aged. :)

    (Also, "first!" As they say.)

    1. Well, thank you! As you know, I always value your opinion. :P (I can't stand this weather, btw ... Do you know that every year around this time, we seriously consider moving North? Just can't seem to pull the trigger.)

    2. Ugh. Indeed. But then you'd have to deal with blizzards and frozen people. My mother always told me of the story that during a blizzard, the subways shut down and she had to walk a few miles from work. Barefoot and for days, when she's exaggerating.

      Post more soon!

  2. :) I'm excited to have another fun blog to read. I think Evangeline's name is lovely and an awesome choice. Nice name of the blog as well. You are so clever. Perhaps I should rethink mine...

    1. I love your blog name choice, crazy girl! ;) Anyway, I agonize over names. Like, I have about 10 potential children names picked out, some of which were picked out even before we had Evangeline. I think I'm somewhat neurotic.
